Who doesn’t love Milly McCarthy? From Ballbrogin in Co. Cork, she’s a hapless hero who can’t help but get into trouble! Her fifth adventure, Milly McCarthy’s Wild Atlantic Antics, sees her getting into all sorts of bother on an overnight school tour to Co. Kerry.
Excited at the prospect of finally having a sleepover with her friends (as there is no way her mam is going to let her have one at home), Milly heads off to Co. Kerry determined to have a brilliant time. However, it’s not long before her usual antics begin, starting with mistaking the emergency cord in the train’s toilet for the flush. Then there’s accidentally scaring the bus driver and getting her welly stuck in a sticky cowpat, not to mention unintentionally setting off the fire extinguisher in the dormitory … but don’t worry, as usual, none of it was her fault!
Here at TPP, we think that the Milly McCarthy series is just fantastic. Leona Forde’s lively, witty and engaging writing, combined with Karen Harte’s wonderfully hilarious illustrations, means that readers can’t help but fall in love with the ultimate rebel girl. Our only complaint is that the books are so good, we finish them far too quickly!
With six books already on bookshop shelves – including a special 2026 World Book Day release – and Leona Forde signing a deal for four more adventures, it looks like Milly McCarthy will be causing chaos for quite a while yet!
Milly McCarthy’s Wild Atlantic Antics is published by Gill Books (2025)
