After the death of her dad, Rowan and her mom move from Arizona in the US to her dad’s homeplace in Ireland. Rowan’s mom won’t tell her why they’ve moved to Ireland, a place Rowan has never even visited. A place where they are strangers.
Rowan and her dad had a special bond. They loved hiking, they loved horses and Rowan loved to listen to her dad’s stories. When he died she burned the notebook of his stories, but in Ireland she finds she cannot escape them, at least not the scary ones about the Sídhe and the creatures of the Otherworld …
And then there is ‘The Wall’. It is old and winds around the town. No one talks about it. Or goes beyond it. They just make sure that whenever it crumbles it is always repaired. However, curiosity gets the better of Rowan and, along with her new friend Ciara, she decides to find out what is beyond The Wall. What follows changes the town – forever.
Captivatingly written in verse, and beautifully illustrated by David Rooney, The Waters and the Wild is a story that will enchant the reader from the very start. Eilish Fisher weaves emotion, magic and the power of Irish folklore into her writing, showing the reader that things are not always as they seem – and there is always another way of looking at something. A wonderful story that is just perfect for cosying up with – along with a hot chocolate – on the cold winter days ahead.
The Waters and the Wild is published by Puffin (2025)
